Welcome to Reception!
We hope your child settles well into school and enjoys their learning experiences. We know this is a new experience for all of you so don’t forget we are around at the beginning and end of every day if there are any concerns or questions.
Term Topics
Autumn term 1: All About Me & Dinosaurs
In the first few weeks we really take the time to settle into the busy routine of school. We learn some golden rules to keep everybody happy, safe and ready to learn and begin our school journey by learning through play!
We begin our year by exploring ourselves, our identities and what makes us special! This helps us to make lots of new friends with all of the other children in the year group. We also have some dinosaur-themed learning too – we love becoming palaeontologists and learning some big words like tyrannosaurus and herbivore.
Autumn term 2: Polar Explorers
In the second half term we notice a change in the weather and as we begin to approach winter our learning takes a colder twist. Our theme is all things polar – we learn about polar animals and people who live in colder climates. It’s also a great opportunity to build a cosy igloo and investigate the chilly science behind ice!
Spring term 1: Awesome Animals
After the Christmas break we begin exploring animals around the globe – from ferocious tigers to cute otters! We spend some time playing and learning about what animals eat, where they live and how they look after themselves.
Spring term 2: Commotion in the Ocean
In the second half term we dive into some deep sea learning – we love exploring the different underwater habitats and playing with all things wet!
Summer term 1: People Who Help Us
In the summer term we begin by thinking about people in our wider community – especially those that do awesome jobs that help other people! We have visits from local volunteers and we even get to experience a real like police car and fire engine!
Summer term 2: Fairytales & Celebrations
We finish our year reflecting on some classic fairytales which we have met throughout the year! Storytelling is hugely important to us in Reception and we even begin writing our own stories too! It is the perfect time to celebrate a busy, important and fun-filled first year of school and we finish the half term with some preparation for becoming Year 1!
Daily Routine
Doors open at 8:40 and registration is at 8:50.
Our morning session usually includes daily phonics practise, a long child-initiated learning session and some book reading time.
After lunch, we begin the afternoon with some regulation and meditation time before exploring maths ideas. Afterwards we usually have some more child-initiated learning time.
Throughout every week we also have music lessons with Mrs Harris, opportunities to visit the hall for indoor P.E. and the playground for outdoor games and visits to our fantastic forest school space.
Our day finishes at 14:55 where we look forward to seeing our grown ups at the ‘Goodbye Line’ on the playground.
